I like tea, travel, cameras, food and hot sauce.

I might be a little late to the party, but I finally got my hands on an iPad (2018 model). Why this iPad? Well firstly, it's affordable - for an Apple iPad - especially when you compare the specs of previous iPads. Secondly, unlike the 2017 iPad, the 2018 iPad is compatible with the Apple Pencil. For someone who gets a bit OCD when editing photos and loves to draw, well, it's pretty neat.

Spot the Difference

I'll be honest, last year I was tempted by 2017s 5th Generation iPad. It was inexpensive, the Air 2 (while arguably better) was getting pretty old, the Mini 4 is too small and the Pro - let's face it - was out of my price range. But I have learnt over the years that, while tempting, sometimes it's better to wait for the next generation to ensure those pesky bugs and grievances have been ironed out. This is particularly true when it comes to Apple, who live to please and are continually making minor (and barely noticeable) tweaks to their products, which on the face of it seem inconsequential, but can make all the difference - Apple Pencil compatibility case-and-point.

In all honesty, I struggle to see any other differences between the 2017 and 2018 iPad. That's besides the obvious, such as the marginally faster A10 Fusion processor chip (the same chip as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus) of course, which replaces the iPad 2017's slower A9 chip. Other than that, the 2017 and 2018 iPad are almost identical - the same 9.7-inch display, speakers and camera - even the design remains the same. Perhaps if I had waited until 2019s 7th Generation iPad, I could get a tablet which embodies all the above in a sexier and lighter Air 2 style body.

Apple Pencil

So why did the introduction of Apple Pencil persuade me to buy? Well, quite simply it works. I have tried other styluses in the past, and they just don't measure up. It wasn't until I tried the Apple Pencil on my friend's iPad Pro that I knew what I had truly been missing out on. Supposedly you get the same great sensitivity and results as you would on the Pro. It was a little while ago since I used the Pro (and it wasn't for very long), but if memory serves it performs just as good. Perhaps even better as my tablet is newer - this could just be a placebo effect though. Of course buying into the Apple ecosystem can get expensive (which is why I dug my heels for a while), but it's clear from when you first open the box that you are buying quality - something that will last.

Should You Go Pro?

Sure, if I had a few spare pennies I would probably opt for the all-singing-all-dancing iPad Pro 10.5-inch... Maybe even the 12.9-inch. They are bigger, faster and supported Apple Pencil from the get go, but overall, I am happy with my choice. I'm not looking for a laptop replacement, more of a supplement to complement each other and get the best of both worlds. Buying an older generation 9.7-inch iPad Pro would be a good alternative, however finding a new one is becoming increasingly difficult as it is now discontinued.
