I’d been thinking about an Ultimate Ears speaker for a while (if Logitech bought them then they must be good!) but couldn’t decide between the UE WONDERBOOM and the UE MEGABOOM… I ended up getting both and keeping one upstairs and the other downstairs! In terms of overall sound quality I think the MEGABOOM is slightly better, but the WONDERBOOM does have a few extra advantages. For starters it costs a lot less, and it’s also really tiny. It’s only 10cm tall so it’s so easy to take anywhere.

Use & Performance

The UE WONDERBOOM is quite basic but I personally think that’s a good thing. I hate technology which is overly complicated so I was really pleased with how easy this speaker was to use. There’s only 4 buttons on the whole thing: volume up and down, power, and an all-in-one play/pause/skip button.

Sound quality is good. It’s not amazing, but it is a lot better than I was expecting from such a small speaker. I think because it has 360 degree sound output it’s a lot better than you think it’s going to be. Maximum volume is 86 Dcb, which is decent but not as good as others (the MEGABOOM gets up to 90). Still, I only use this at about half volume most of the time which is fine for my needs. I have noticed that the sound quality does start to suffer a bit at the higher volumes but it’s not noticeable enough to be a problem for me. Bluetooth connection is lost sometimes, but that might be a problem with my phone.

Good Points

As well as the sound quality there are a few other really great bits about the WONDERBOOM which I really like. The 10 hour battery life is quite decent, and the compact design makes this really durable, so even when I take it outside or on trips I don’t worry that it’s going to get damaged. One of the best things about the UE WONDERBOOM is that it has an IPX7 waterproof rating, which means it will work in the shower or in the pool on holiday. Other speakers I looked at only had a splashproof rating.

Room For Improvement

I think there are a couple of areas where the WONDERBOOM could have been better. First, there’s no WiFi. I know that sticking to bluetooth is a good way of keeping the price down (and the WONDERBOOM is very affordable) but I’d be willing to pay a bit more for WiFi. Secondly, there’s no voice integration with Siri or Google Now. I didn’t think this would bother me as I don’t use them much, but the MEGABOOM does have voice integration and I did find that I started to use it from time to time. Not a big deal though.

Design

The UE WONDERBOOM is a speaker for people who don’t like the look of speakers! Personally the design hasn’t really won me over, I think it looks a bit cartoon-y and a bit like a child’s ball! Not my cup of tea (I prefer the more sleek speakers) but I can see how it would appeal to others, especially if this is being bought as a holiday speaker or a party speaker. There are 6 colours to choose from which is good. What I do love about the design is the little built-in hook because this means I can attach the speaker to my bag and not have to find room for it inside my bag when I take it anywhere. That gets a thumbs up from me!

Worth It?

Out of the two Ultimate Ears speakers I bought, I do prefer the MEGABOOM in terms of aesthetics and performance, but the WONDERBOOM definitely wins on price. And to be honest what you get for the price is excellent. If you want just a casual wireless speaker then the WONDERBOOM will do the job.
