I’ve bought quite a few wireless speakers lately as I’ve wanted some for different parts of the house. The UE MEGABOOM is probably one of the largest I have. It’s a pretty decent bluetooth speaker for a pretty decent price, and what it lacks in overall sound quality it makes up for with some standout features.

Performance

I can’t complain! Honestly I think I’ve probably heard better, but for a small wireless speaker connecting via bluetooth the sound quality is actually excellent. I think the 360 degree design really helps as it helps the sound to filter throughout the room for better acoustics, and there is a pretty decent app which allows you to adjust the bass so that you can get the exact sound you want. In terms of performance the UE MEGABOOM can definitely hold its own amongst the its competitors like the Bose SoundLink.

Battery Life

The battery life on the UE MEGABOOM is excellent and is much better than other wireless bluetooth speakers. The battery lasts for around 20 hours, and takes just 2.5 hours to charge. Other wireless speakers I’ve looked at have only had around 12 - 16 hours of battery so this is really impressive.

Features and Functions

The features and functions on the UE MEGABOOM are about what you’d expect from a wireless speaker. You have the bluetooth connection (not WiFi unfortunately), voice integration with Siri and Google Now (which also means you can use this as a speakerphone), and waterproofing. I will say that the UE MEGABOOM deserves a pat on the back for actually being waterproof and not just splash resistant. It has an IPX7 rating which is very impressive and means the speaker can be submerged up to 1m for 30 minutes and it should live to tell the tale. Most other speakers only have an IPX4 waterproof rating.

Design

The design certainly isn’t bad but I prefer the look of some other models over this. I don’t know why but the UE MEGABOOM looks a bit like a kid’s pencil case! The all black and all white versions are the best of the bunch in my opinion (I have the all black version) but the others seem a bit unattractive to me really.

This is probably one of the larger and heavier types of portable bluetooth speaker on the market today. It’s about 22 cm tall so it’s still compact, it’s just not the most compact. Despite this the speaker does feel very durable and seems to be very well made so I have no problems toting this around with me.

Worth It?

There are good things and bad things about the UE MEGABOOM. I think the battery life, IPX7 rating, and the app are excellent, but I would have liked slightly better sound quality and perhaps a nicer design. What I will say though is that in terms of features and functions there’s really not that much difference between the UE MEGABOOM and comparable products from other brands which are a lot more expensive. If price is a factor then I would say that you do get a lot for your money with this speaker.
