Ladies and Gentlemen, there's an elephant in the room and we need to usher it out the door before we go any further. The Sony SRS BTM8 is a brilliant buy because it's a very solid portable speaker available at a mind-blowing price. But it undeniably looks a more than a little bit like a handbag. Now there's nothing wrong with handbags at all, zilch, nul, nada. It's just that there aren't many pieces of modern technology thay willingly embrace the look and, at least initially, you might find it a little distracting.

Handbagged

Let me tell you now, though, that its distinctive design shouldn't put you off. Disregarding the comparison with the essential female accesory, the Sony SS BTM8 is all smoothly flowing lines available in uncomplicated black or white. It's kinda classy, with a blue led indicator that's more than a little reminiscent of some of the Playstation models. As you'd expect from a Sony product, the plastic that comprises most of the body feels solid and well put together. The price may be extremely competitive, but the Japanese company haven't compromised on performance.

Of course, having that handle also means that it's very easy to carry around with you without the fear of dropping it. Just to give you a sense of its size, the dimensions are 18.5cm x 8.8cm x 24.5cm and it weighs 1.1kg. So for all that it looks like a handbag, it isn't actually very big.

Best Kept Indoors

For all that the Sony SRS BTM8 is extremely portable, it isn't really an outdoor-sy type. It'll be much more comfortable sitting on a table indoors than it will lying on the grass, never mind the beach. The styling suggests that, and so it proves. It's not robust or dust-proof like the UE Boom, and it's nowhere near as noisy, either. Its decibel power indoors is perfectly satisfactory, but outside it struggles to make itself heard above the crowd.

Whilst it might be light on raw power compared to more expensive speakers, the sound quality is nothing to sniff at. At all. For a speaker in this price bracket, it does bass rather well, and sound is generally clear. No complaints here.

User Friendly

In connectivity terms, Bluetooth pairing is quick and easy, either with your phone or another device. If you're using your mobile, it also functions as a hands-free loudspeaker, so you can answer using the internal microphone whilst you carry on with whatever you're doing. Don't expect it to work well from thirty feet away, though. The Sony SRS BTM8 also has NFC technology built in, so you can use the proximity method if you prefer, but it's probably just as easy to use Bluetooth. There's a 3.5mm aux jack if you want to go old school.

Sony claim a battery life of twenty hours, but in practice you're probably doing well to get fifteen out of it if you're playing at higher volumes. The noteworthy thing is the retro power source: 4 AA batteries rather than any rechargeable malarkey. Some will prefer the independence of old fashioned batteries, but of course it probably makes it more expensive in the long run. Counteracting that is the fact that you can also run the speaker from the mains if you wish. Problem sorted.
