My experience of VR before this was one of those headsets which cost a couple of quid from the discount shop that you put your own smartphone into. I wasn’t very impressed! Luckily the Sony Playstation VR kit is a lot better. It’s not perfect, but the overall experience is quite incredible.

Getting Started

There are two options to choose from: the headset only, or the starter bundle. The starter bundle includes the PS camera which you really do need because it’s one of the main things that helps keep everything aligned to make the experience more realistic, but it doesn’t include a PS4! The Sony Playstation VR headset attaches to a PS4 or PS4 Pro, so you do definitely need a console to play.

Setup

I hit a hurdle quite early on: setup. Actual physical setup of the PS VR was easy even though there was a lot of cable clutter, but getting all the settings right was very time consuming. Lots of calibration was needed like IPD setup which is annoying but it’s worth it because it means you get a better picture.

Tech Specs

I don’t have much VR experience or knowledge, so I can’t really say how the PS VR holds up against other models in terms of its technical side, but I can’t see that there’s any big problems. It has a 5.7 inch OLED screen which seems to be a perfectly fine size, and the 100 degree vision is obviously great. It contains an accelerometer and gyroscope for authenticity, and has both HDMI and USB connectors. The 1080p display at 120 fps is OK for VR, but I was quite disappointed at first because I was expecting a lot more.

Compared to what I’m used to on the TV, the graphics are nowhere near as good. I soon got used to it and I now think that the graphics are good enough for the first real generation of VR headsets, but at first the difference is quite dramatic. You can use the headset to play Blu-Ray so it’s like you have your own little private wearable cinema, but I haven’t used this feature yet and don’t think I will because the quality is so much better on the TV, especially if you’re playing 4K content on a 4K-enabled TV.

Playing Games

Considering the PS VR is still quite new there is already quite a decent selection of games so I was very impressed with that. The actual VR experience offered by the Sony Playstation VR is amazing, it really does feel like you could just reach out and grab something, which is something earlier VR headsets have failed to do. Unfortunately I have struggled a bit with motion sickness. I get travel sick in the car, so I was sort of expecting it. To me, it feels like being in a car, where your body feels like it’s moving even though it’s physically still. I do have to limit how long I spend wearing the headset to about 20 minutes.

Design

Design is nice enough, and I even think it’s won some design awards. The headset itself is adjustable, so I am able to make the fit more roomy to accommodate my glasses comfortably; the only problem is that the further away the lens is from your face, the more light is let in which spoils things a little bit. The only issue I have with the design is that the headset itself is quite heavy. Although I haven’t tried other models, I believe that this is one of the heaviest headsets. It does get a bit uncomfortable.

Worth It?

Yes. Despite its flaws, it does offer an excellent VR experience. However, I will say that this is only worth it if you already have a PS4 or PS4 Pro, because otherwise the cost is really going to mount up. If you don’t have a PS4 console, I think it would be better to look at some of the alternative VR headsets.

The Samsung Gear VR is by the same people that made the Oculus Rift and it uses the Oculus Mobile Platform, so there are plenty of high end features included even though this is a budget model.

The Oculus Rift VR headset is quite lightweight so it’s very comfortable to wear, even for extended periods, and doesn’t place too much pressure on the neck. It is lighter than other VR headsets.
