Loves bubbles, food and lying on the beach!!

Every time I saw a Nikon ad with Ashton Kutcher doing some weird or crazy thing while showing off his "amazing" camera I just knew I had to have one. When I finally saw an ad about being able to take great pictures in low light settings I took to the internet to check prices and order one. As always I settled on Amazon where I found the lovely Nikon Coolpix S3500 in orange, my second favorite color, for a price I didn't mind paying. I quickly put in the order and with amazon prime it was here two days later!

Nikon Coolpix S3500

Nicely sealed and protected in the standard Amazon Prime box I was excited for the great pictures I knew it would produce. I wanted to be able to go out at night and take amazing pictures that my cellphone never could or great pictures in dimly lit restaurants without the blinding flash. Inside I found a small, minimalist designed black box. On the box it stated the usual information: what was included inside, requirements to use the camera on my computer and a briefing of the cameras specs. All repeated in Spanish.

The camera features a wide 7x zoom, 20.1 megapixels and glamour retouch among a bevy of other add ons. When I first took the camera out of the box I noticed how light weight it was. The camera is rectangular with a just barely rounded top. I don't know if this makes a difference for a lot of people, but holding the camera facing me is easier this way than with a perfectly straight camera. The curve matches with your hand which is perfect since the lightweight camera can easily be knocked out of your hand. Another thing I noticed, quickly, about this camera was how shiny it was and how eye-catching the orange color was! I loved it, because I love bright and vibrant colors that stand out, but for more stand offish people and people who prefer something a little more subtle, there are better options.

Nikon Coolpix S3500

Amazon had the camera listed in orange, white, purple, black and red. According to the Nikon website, however, there is also a pink color! As soon as I charged the battery and put the camera together I began snapping pictures of everything! Selfies, pictures of the dog, candy, food, nature. The camera features 20 different scene modes to compliment all of your pictures. If you're more like me then you will make great use of the scene auto selector and let the camera decide which scene best compliments the moment!

I love that the camera comes with a lens shift vibration reduction. Basically this just helps if your hands tend to be shaky when taking pictures. I don't always have my tripod on me or can't always bring it and often when asking other people to take my picture you can't predict how shaky they may be or how much blur might end up in the picture. With this feature the camera keeps the shot focused and ready to help reduce this problem. Other features in the camera include the smart portrait system which does things like detect blinking and warn you so you don't take a picture, soften your skin and of course feature the always popular beauty mode!

Nikon Coolpix S3500

Motion detection and subject tracking are two other features the S3500 has. Motion detection does as expected and increases the shutter speed when something is moving faster to help produce better quality pictures. Subject tracking was something new to me. It helps you to take pictures of constantly moving or on the go objects, such as pets or children. All of these features help make for some great photos, although I recommend against using the beauty mode. One of the absolute best parts for me was how clear the HD video recordings were. Videos looked amazing and sounded even more amazing. A lot of camera don't pick up sound too great if you're not right next to the microphone. Not the S3500, it picked up sounds from all around and I loved it. It's nice knowing I can put the camera on my tripod and it will still pick up my voice from afar. Personally, I love my camera. I did not want anything big or bulky that involved a lot of construction, care or camera knowledge to use. I wanted to be able to simply snap my pictures and go! If you want the same and want a good camera for a reasonable price I recommend this camera. It's a great starter or intermediate camera and I'ms till learning more about all of the features every day. So, definitely check it out if you find yourself in the market for a nice replaceable point and shoot camera!

Most of us grumble at the prospect of carrying a chunky and heavy camera, the very many lenses and the tripod. Sometimes, it becomes cumbersome to carry these around when we are on a vacation; but vacation is the one time where we just can't do without a good camera. Nikon Coolpix S3500 comes to our rescue at times like these. It strikes the perfect balance between functionality and style.

Nikon Coolpix S3500 is a good looking, light weight compact digital camera that would be a great partner in all your trips, tours and vacations. With its almost size-zero appearance - it is a cool 20.5mm thick - and a 20MP sensor, you can be sure of some good pictures with no trouble.

This camera, despite its thick frame, packs in a 7x optical zoom along with a decent vibration reduction resistance. When you add these cool features to its autofocusing feature and a 720p HD recording capability, it is perfect for all your outdoor events.

Coming in a number of colours - bright orange, cool pink, dazzling red, purple, and black - this camera is versatile and a bit of a crowdpleaser.

Out of the Box

The minute you tear open the box, you will find a rather heavy instruction manual. It suggests that you first bury your nose into the book before jumping to play around with your new toy. There is nothing to worry about here, it is just a simple Quick Start guide to help you know what's there in your new buy. If you're not really an instruction manual type of person, you'll be able to figure it out pretty quickly on your own.

Along with the camera, you will also find View NX2 editing software on a CD. This CD, incidentally also comes with the full user manual; however, you would need to use this CD only after you have taken your first picture.

Design and Look

The appearance and the layout is nothing new. It looks just like any other in the Nikon Coolpix range. The power button is situated on top of the camera as usual. The zoom ring is tiny and the shutter release is also on top of the camera. On the back panel you will find that the LCD screen has taken up most of the camera's landscape leaving pretty much very little space for the rest of the camera buttons to nestle against each other.

It's no DSLR. You won't take earth shattering pictures. But it's fast to start up and quick to snap a shot or two, then throw into your bag. It can fit in a pocket, you can choose a colour. If you want to learn photography, this may not be the camera for you. If you want to shoot HD video, pictures, and then take the camera home and upload to Facebook and Youtube, this camera is a bargain.

Modes and Filters

The Nikon Coolpix S3500 comes with 18 scene modes along with Auto mode. When you take pictures in the portrait mode, you can use a number of options such as the blink detection, red-eye fix, smile timer, and skin softening as well. This way a large number of your photos can look clearer and sharper. Moreover, this camera comes with a subject tracking ability; it can track your subject perfectly in focus even when the subject is on the move. Afterwards, if you feel you could have done a better job, you can always retouch the photos with the available photo filters. There are a wide range of filters available to you - choose from fisheye, sensitive colour, miniature and more.

The camera comes with special effects that can be added to the images before you start shooting while the quick effects can be applied after the shooting is over - during playback.

One of the main attractions of Nikon Coolpix S3500 is that it sports a 7x optical zoom. It is surprising that such a delicate body has been fitted with a zoom range of 4.7 - 32.9mm that can be scaled to up to 35 mm as well. This kind of zoom is a great feature in such a small camera, perfect for concerts and outdoor events.

Picture Quality

The picture quality is excellent; the photo looks great without the pesky red-eye even when taken with the flash. Skin tones also appear true. The images look well saturated, the colours are rich and vibrant and the sharpness is almost perfect.

The lens performance is decent with detailing seen at both ends of the images. There is a good reduction in purple fringing that usually occurs with this kind of lens; however, there was a little bit of pincushion distortion in the images. And 5cm seems to be the minimum focusing length - meaning you can get close enough to get good micro shots.

Noise distortion is appreciably low at ISO 80 and the images get softer as the ISO inches towards 200. Noise levels increase significantly at ISO levels 400 and 800 although they don't have a significant effect on the quality of the images. When you come to ISO 1600, you can actually see a lot of noise distortion and a great deal of loss of detail.

With the Motion Blur reduction, the camera actually automatically selects a faster shutter speed so that the moving subjects can stay in focus. This works more like the Vibration Reduction sensor that compensates the camera shakes and slips caused by unsteady photographer hands.

This is a versatile, user friendly camera, particularly for outdoor use. The TZ35 doesn't have all the features some cameras do, but if you don't need them, this is a quality camera at a bargain price.
