I like the idea of portable, handheld vacuum cleaners because they’re so small and you can get them out for little jobs instead of having to get your big upright out, but I think most of them do a terrible job with very little suction. I won’t buy a handheld now but I still need something small and lightweight for little jobs, so I chose the Hoover ‘Freedom’ FD22G. Although it’s not perfect it’s still a very decent ‘backup’.

What’s So Good?

The unique selling point here is that the Hoover Freedom 22v is completely cable-free, so there’s no cords, no cables, and there’s not even a bag on it which makes it very lightweight (just 2.2kg, compared to between 6 - 7 kg for what’s considered to be a lightweight upright). Having no cables means I can just grab this and use it whenever, rather than messing around with getting an upright set up and plugged in. There is a handheld option with this too, but I mostly just use it as is and find that to be fine for me.

What’s Not So Good?

Basically, don’t go into this thinking that you can get away with the Freedom 22v as your main vacuum cleaner because that’s not what it’s designed for. The battery only lasts for 25 minutes so you’ll be against the clock if you have a big house, and the suction and power is obviously nowhere near what you get from a standard upright. But if you want a backup vacuum cleaner, or a vacuum for quick, emergency jobs like cat hair on the floor just as guests are going to arrive then Hoover have made a very good effort.

What’s Included?

I was actually really shocked to get 3 attachments in here as I wasn’t expecting any. You get a rotating brush which is meant to clean deep in the carpets, and upholstery brush for sofas and things, and a dust tool to pick up big bits of dust and hair. Honestly, I’ve only used the dust tool as this is all I need. It’s OK. It does get big pieces of loose dust but it won’t actively work to loosen any. Whatever tool you use you have the option of using the ‘continuous power’ mode so you don’t need to keep your finger pressed.

Appearance

It’s very basic, and it’s not going to win any awards for its beauty, but there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s a silver/grey colour so it’s not offensive, and it’s not like we keep it on display in the house anyway! It’s actually very discreet with a compact base and thin tube which I like because it’s easy to store away.

Practicalities

There’s good and bad bits here. Firstly, I think that a 0.7 litre capacity on such a small vacuum cleaner is amazing. My main vacuum cleaner, which is lots bigger and lots heavier, only has a 1 lite capacity so I think this is great and it means I don’t have to go and empty it all the time. On the downside, I really don’t think the battery is going to last long at all. When I first got this the battery lasted for about 30 minutes which I thought was fantastic because it’s only supposed to last for 25. But after just a few uses the battery life has gone down noticeably. The box does say to contact Hoover for a replacement battery if needed so hopefully that will be nice and straightforward because I do think I will need one soon

Overall

The Hoover Freedom 22v is so much better than standard handheld vacuum cleaners, and it does a great job in dust emergencies. It’s not going to cut it as a main vacuum cleaner for the whole house, but as a little lightweight backup for quick jobs I don’t think there’s many bad things you can say about this.
