The Fitbit Ionic is supposed to be a smartwatch (at least that’s what people are saying!) but I think it’s more of a fitness tracker disguised as a smartwatch. It works well as a tracker, it’s probably the best one I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a few, but it’s not a great smartwatch. Apple still have the edge with smartwatches, although the battery life of the Ionic is way better than it is on the Apple Watch.

Fitness Tracker v Smartwatch

As a fitness tracker, the Fitbit Ionic is very similar to the Fitbit Blaze, excerpt it has a few extra features which make it a better option, like a water-resistant coating, built-in GLONASS GPS, and a customisable face. It does pretty much everything you’d expect from a high end fitness tracker, including steps, distance, blood oxygen, and all that. Feature-wise, it’s probably one of the best trackers out there.

As a smartwatch, it does struggle to keep up with the competition, and if I had wanted a smartwatch rather than a tracker I would have been disappointed with this. It lacks a lot of smartwatch features, like you can read messages on the watch, but there is no functionality for replying to these messages.

The Fitbit App

All set up and stats are sorted through the Fitbit app, which is the same app for all their trackers and watches. That was a big plus for me because i’ve had Fitbit trackers in the past so I already know how to use the app. The actual Fitbit app is very good and I like how everything is laid out easily so I can keep track of my stats, but I always seem to have a bit of trouble with Bluetooth syncing unfortunately.

Design

As a sports watch, the design is nice. It’s a unisex watch, but there are 3 colours to choose from (Blue Grey, Charcoal, and Burnt Orange) so you can have a bit of input over the overall look. I will say that I find it to be a bit chunky for me, but I don’t know whether this is just because I’ve been wearing a tiny Fitbit Alta for a while now so there is a big size difference. I might get used to it eventually. It is quite comfortable to wear though, and there are 2 different sized bands so it’s easy to get the right fit.

Downsides?

I’ve noticed that Fitbit seem to be advertising a few features that either don’t exist, or I can’t find them! Also, some of the stuff they advertise, like Guided Workouts, are supported by the Ionic but are not included so you have to buy a subscription separately. When I’m paying a couple of hundred for a Fitbit watch, I want everything included, or they need to be very clear. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for.

Worth It?

I wanted a Fitbit fitness tracker, so overall I am very happy with this, it does everything I want it to. If I had wanted something that’s more like a smartwatch then I wouldn’t have liked this because I don’t think it has the range of features that are expected of a smartwatch. As a tracker, it’s the best out there.
