Overall

Control on the DJI Mavic Pro is excellent. As with any drone, it takes time to get the hang of things, but the lightweight body (734g) and small size (83x83x198mm) make this simple to manoeuvre.

The DJI Mavic Pro is one of the most portable drones available so it’s very popular. The wings and propellers fold so it’s easy to pack it away and take it on holiday. I was worried that the added portability would mean a compromise on some features, or on overall durability, but I actually don’t have anything bad to say about this drone. In my experience most DJI stuff is very good, and this is no different.

Options

There are quite a few different buying options for the DJI Mavic Pro. There’s the Mavic Pro and the Mavic Pro Platinum, and then both of these models also come in the ‘Fly More’ combo pack which gives you some extra batteries, propellers, and a few accessories like car charger and carry case. There’s also the limited edition Mavic Pro, which is exactly the same as the Mavic Pro but in alpine white instead of grey.

The Mavic Pro and the Mavic Pro Platinum are mostly the same as far as I can tell. The only real differences are that the Mavic Pro Platinum is quieter (60% quieter according to DJI), and it has a slightly longer flight time (about 3 minutes extra; 30 minutes compared to 27 minutes). I just bought the normal Mavic Pro. I know that some people will appreciate the upgrades of the Mavic Pro Platinum but for me a little less sound and an extra 3 minutes up in the air couldn’t really fully justify the price increase.

Control

Control on the DJI Mavic Pro is excellent. As with any drone, it takes time to get the hang of things, but the lightweight body (734g) and small size (83x83x198mm) make this simple to manoeuvre. I found that the first time I used this it took ages to get it up off the ground because everything needed calibrating, but it’s a lot faster now because calibration should only really be needed before first use.

The controller felt a little strange at first because it’s a lot smaller than other drone remotes I’ve used. I did like the little screen though because it gave me a bit more input over the settings without needing to get my phone out and launch the app. I found that the Mavic Pro did have good stability in mild winds but seemed to struggle a bit in windier conditions; one of the downsides of having a lightweight drone.

The 40mph top speed and 4.3 mile range is very decent, and the Mavic Pro has excellent obstacle avoidance so I haven’t had too many incidents so far. It has GPS/GLONASS technology so there is a ‘return home’ feature which I think is important for drones. My only real gripe is that the drone’s legs are a bit short so it can sometimes make it tricky to find a suitable place to land (especially in a hurry).

Camera and Video

The DJI Mavic Pro has good camera and video capabilities. Video is excellent, with 4K video at 30 frames per second, and 1080p at 96fps. The 12mp camera is very decent for a drone, but I do prefer the auto focus feature on the older DJI Phantom because I found it easier to get clear shots with that one. I think I just need to learn how to do it. My husband manages to get very good shots on the Mavic Pro and says the three-axis stabilised gimbal helps to keep things steady enough for him to be able to get good pics.

Worth It?

It’s definitely not the cheapest, but I don’t think there’s really any other portable drone that’s got as good specs as this one. I particularly wanted one that I could take on holiday with me, so the DJI Mavic Pro was the obvious choice. Apart from the annoyingly short legs, this drone is a real winner.

The small size of the DJI Spark means it’s very portable, and it’s a good choice for beginners because handling is a little bit simpler than on larger drones.
