Cambridge Audio Minx GO Price History

Sam Applegate

By Sam Applegate

I like bacon sandwiches.

Usually priced around the £100 mark, the Cambridge Audio Minx GO is in the midst of a battle royale of Bluetooth speakers, with sonic explosions whistling around its ears, but fortunately for it (and us), it has more than enough sound power to send all of its rivals at the same price point running for cover.

The Understated Look

Perhaps the least appealing aspect of the Cambridge Audio Minx GO, to my eyes at least, is its appearance. Whilst the speaker is sturdily built and unlikely to complain about the odd bit of rough treatment, it doesn't really pull out any stops when it comes to catching admiring eyes. Available in either black or white, it's a compact design that's effectively a plastic brick. There's a swivelling foot at the bottom that helps it stay upright, but other than that it's fairly visually unremarkable. That contrasts quite strongly with products by JBL, Beats and UE.

There's a recessed power button positioned on the top, flanked by two volume buttons on either side, and as far as controls go that's your lot, although I'd suggest that doesn't really matter too much.

The design also means that in contrast to something like the UE Boom, it's very much a one directional speaker and will benefit from being positioned in a corner or against a wall so that you can take advantage of its rich sounds. Whilst it's undoubtedly light enough to take travelling with you at just under 1kg in weight (and Cambridge have provided a soft carrying case to help you avoid getting scratches), it's not going to give everyone round the fire the same quality of sound after a day in the great outdoors. It's best used inside.

It Purrs

How about the sound it produces, I hear you cry? I'll give you a clue: the Cambridge Audio Minx GO won a What Hi- Hi? award for its category, so impressed was the magazine by it. Of course, the sound isn't perfect, and you'll find richer, crisper, bassier sounds out there on the market. The thing is, you'll probably end up paying a huge amount more cash for the pleasure. For the price it is, you're not going to find anything better; it's rich, loud and has a decent amount of bass power if that's important to you. With certain kinds of music can sometimes distort a little at maximum volume, but by and large this isn't a problem that crops up much.

Furthermore, the difference between listening to the Cambridge Audio Minx GO and using either your phone or laptop's speakers is gigantic. There is simply no comparison in either the volume or the quality of the sound, which is why it's such an attractive wireless speaker for pairing with such gadgets.

Going All Night Long

For such a cheap speaker, Cambridge have managed to throw in some fairly elite functionality. NFC is present and correct, alongside an AUX jack and of course your Bluetooth connection. The Minx GO will remember up to 8 devices at a time, and the pairing process itself is swift and unproblematic. There's no included speaker-microphone, but this can't really be held against it.

One of the biggest attractions of the Cambridge Audio Minx GO is its utterly remarkable battery life. Cambridge claim 18 hours of play time, and in testing it at the upper reaches of its volume limit it came pretty damn close to achieving that. That's significantly better performance than a number of speakers that will cost you twice as many pennies. Fantastic.

You might worry that such a substantial battery life demands an extensive charging time, but you'd be wrong. Give it a couple hours either with the proprietary charger or via USB and you'll be fully juiced.

The inclusion of the USB port also means that, in a pinch, you'll be able to top up your puny phone or tablet using the Minx. That's a pretty sexy feature.

One of the best things about the UE WONDERBOOM is that it has an IPX7 waterproof rating, which means it will work in the shower or in the pool on holiday.

The battery life on the UE MEGABOOM is excellent and is much better than other wireless bluetooth speakers. The battery lasts for around 20 hours, and takes just 2.5 hours to charge.

Bose SoundLink Revolve

The design of the Bose SoundLink Revolve can’t be faulted. It looks very attractive and stunning with a smooth and streamlined appearance and seems more like an ornament than a speaker!

JBL Flip 4

For a portable, wireless speaker with a bluetooth connection, the sound quality from the JBL Flip 4 is absolutely spectacular, and it’s got a pretty decent volume range, too.
