I've grown up being a fan of a manual razor - I never really wanted to use an electric razor as didn't feel they compared to the real thing. However mother nature had a different idea, as over the years I've started to get shaving rash on my neck. I've done lots of research and realised it was probably caused by the irritation of a manual blade so I decided to take the plunge and opt for an electric razor.

Braun Series 3 340s-4

I'm a fan of the 'one stop shop' of Amazon so browsed their selection and was originally completely overwhelmed by the different choice available. They probably stock every brand and model on the market. It's difficult to choose whether to get a foil type razor (like the Braun Series 3340s) or one of the rotary types. Like most things in life, it just depends on your preference. I chose a foil razor as it causes less skin irritation which I hope would calm down the shaving rash I'd been experiencing.

As usual, with most electricals these days, the product arrived in far too much packaging for my liking. The item took up maybe less than one quarter of the box - the rest was plastic and air. With the current push to recycling and waste etc. it would be nice it manufactures remembered this when designing the packaging. Anyway, the box contained the shaver, an easy to read instruction manual, the charger, a little brush and a plastic 'lid' to use to protect the shaver when travelling.

Braun Series 3 340s-4

You're advised to fully charge the device before using it and I found this took about two hours. Compared to other grooming products I own, the Braun shaver is much quicker.

I must say the shaver is an impressive piece of equipment. It's been really well designed as feels perfect in your hand as a good size and not too heavy or too light. There is a rubber grip around the edge which is comfortable and gives reassurance the shaver would not slip out of your hands if wet. It feels really solidly made which I hope means it will last a long time.

The operation is really easy due to the large 'on/off' button on the front. Below this are lights which indicate when the item requires charging. There is a really handy precision trimmer bit on the back which you can use to neaten up sideburns, edges, beards or anything else! To use this you simply slide it up and it will start. Once finished just slide it back down.

There are two 'floating head' blades which can move independently to reach all the contours of your face - this makes it really comfortable to use. In the middle of these there is a middle trimmer to help the shaver get even closer to your skin to give a really clean sharp look.

Braun Series 3 340s-4

A fantastic selling point about this shave is that it can be used wet or dry! To use it in the shower just use some shaving foam or gel to ensure there is no irritation. I personally am happy with using it dry. As the shaver can be used wet it means it's really easy to clean as you just run it under the tap! The other option is to use the little brush which is included in the box to brush away the hairs and keep the unit clean.

It takes me less than 5 minutes to complete a full shave using the Braun. I normally do this two or 3 times a week so the battery would last a whole month before needing to be charged again.

Braun Series 3 340s-4

Overall I'm happy with the shave this piece of kit gives. The shave is provides is really close which is just what I wanted. Sometimes you will need to go over the same area more than once to make sure all the hairs are removed, but I guess that's because these types of machines will never get as close to the skin as a manual razor. I'm happy with that trade off though as my shaving rash has disappeared. Also using the shaver dry means much less mess than using the traditional method. It also saves a lot of time.

I would recommend this product - go buy it.

My partner decided to purchase the Braun Series 3 340s-4 as he was getting fed up of having to wet shave every morning. He chose this one above others as it was a relatively good price for a well known brand to try out the world of electric shaving. He of course didn't expect it to work quite as well as a good old fashioned wet shave in the morning, but hoped it would be good enough to get rid of a bit of stubble for a day at work.

Braun Series 3 340s 4

He decided to buy the shaver from Amazon as it was one of the cheaper places and was easy. Packaging was fine and delivery was smooth, as always with Amazon.

Upon delivery, inside the box were: the Braun Series 3 340s-4 shaver itself, a charger, a small charging stand, a brush and an instructions booklet (not that this is necessary for the product, it's fairly self-explanatory!). His first impressions of the shaver were that it was well built, had a nice weight to it and felt good in the hand as well as looking good.

Using the shaver is fairly simple. It has a small inset button on the centre front which switches the product on and off. The body is navy blue solid plastic, and there is a black rubber grip around the outside - this is very handy as the plastic on the shaver would likely become very slippery when used wet. On the back of the shaver is another very useful feature: the trimmer, a piece of hard plastic with a metal blade on top which can be pushed up to be used at whatever level you want to trim beards and sideburns. The actual shaver part is very good and designed well, with what they call a free floating triple action system with twin "Sensofoil" sections on either side; each of the three parts on the top moves independently to get closer to the face - these all combine to give a good close shave. It's great that this can be used under the shower (for ease) as well as with a shaving gel or foam, or simply alone. The shaver is fairly quiet to use - it only has a light buzzing noise that won't disturb anyone outside the room.

Braun Series 3 340s 4

The battery life is fairly good, lasting up to a month between charges sometimes. It can be charged either by plugging it directly into the cable into the plug socket at the wall, or the cable can be plugged into the base of the charging stand into which the shaver can be placed - this is very useful as it looks tidier in the bathroom and is less likely to get knocked off on to the floor. When the battery life is getting low on the shaver, a red light on the front will flash alerting you to this when you switch it on.

Despite all the good things this shaver has and promises (with the tagline: "Tough on 3 day stubble, smooth on skin") which it does fulfil to an extent, it's not the best shaver you can buy for this price. Since purchasing this product, he has bought another which definitely gets a closer shave. The Braun Series 3 340s-4 is very good at what it does, which is getting rid of most of the stubble without leaving any red marks or rashes on the skin, mostly leaving a smooth face, it could be closer in certain areas, particularly under the chin and on the neck where it seems to not be able to get some of the longer hairs. It is however easy to transport and is very sturdy - it doesn't come with its own carry case but doesn't get damaged when thrown into a wash bag by itself.

Braun Series 3 340s 4

Overall, he would recommend the product, but by itself it doesn't suffice for a very clean shave if used all the time. He needs to use it in addition to other products, whether an old fashioned wet razor shave or another electric shaver.

I like bacon sandwiches.

Alright, I'll admit it. The Braun Series 3 340s-4 was top of my shopping list. But instead, I opted to go for a much cheaper model to satisfy the wife moaning at me to get a 'proper' razor so that I could stop spending so much money on wet shaves. But straight away it was money down the drain. As usual, my skin looked like I'd been greeted by the mother-in-law after her second G&T (red blotches everywhere) and I was stuck in the dog house with a wife that didn't want to be seen out with me.

Well, as usual, I did as I was told and ended up opting for good old Braun to save the day.

A Wet Shave with an Electric Shaver

The thing that most attracted me to the Braun Series 3 340s-4 was the promise that I could have a wet shave using an electric shaver. This meant I could still enjoy a weekly pampering, but without the wife moaning about my lack of commitment to the garden and other household duties.

Well, the results are incredible. Not only does my skin feel as smooth as a baby's bottom (a very clean one at that) but perfection takes time, which means I can hide in the bath for hours while she decides on swatches and paint colours somewhere very far away.

Granted, it does take some time to get used to a shaver like this. It's like going back to basics and learning a whole new way to moving your skin around until you get it at the right angle, but once you've got the knack you are well away.

Use With Balm or Without

After being so blown away with the wet shave results, I did fall into the trap of trying a dry shave, but that was one mistake I won't be repeating. Even before I'd finished shaving it looked like the mother-in-law had been up to her old tricks and I was very much benched for the rest of the evening.

I know my useless brother walks around the house looking like something out of a Gillette advert with his shaver in hand as he 'multi tasks'. But he has much more normal skin than me. So the moral of the story is, if you've got really sensitive skin keep to the wet shave. If you've got more of a ruggish, what I would call 'used' look about you then you can probably get the same results dry.

Fabulous Trimmer

One great feature of the Braun Series 3 340s-4 (which could really do with shortening its name) is the trimmer. It is really good. It gives really precise, accurate results and doesn't leave a mark on you. I've even used it to trim some pretty Wiggin-esque sideburns and it didn't catch once.

Where's the Carrying Case?

The one question I do have for Braun is 'where's the carrying case'. I can't believe you pay full whack for a shaver and then you don't get anywhere to store it. I know you're meant to leave it to charge when you're not using it. But most of us want to take it to work, on holiday or just to the gym and unless you have a wife that buys you a separate carrying case to stop you moaning (thanks luv!) you have to put it in with your shampoo's and stuff in your wash bag which I'm sure can't be safe.

A schoolboy error from Braun and one that really needs to be rectified in future models.

Philips PT720 PowerTouch

At this price you don't get a top of the range shaver, especially from Philips, but you really don't need it. It's a shaver, it shaves well, it charges well and it's a great present.

Philips PT920 PowerTouch Pro

The Philips PowerTouch Pro PT920 looks great and cuts well. It is fast, efficient and easy to use. The only downside is that there's no charge indicator.

Philips AT899-16 AquaTouch

A good, basic shaver that is strong when dry but more sensitive when wet. The Philips AT899/16 AquaTouch is a solid buy. However, there are probably better options out there.
