Let's face it, baby gates aren't partially exciting, they are however an essential health and safety feature for any home. Whether you have a crawling baby, curious toddler, mischievous house bunny, enthusiastic puppy or untrained kitten to protect, a good baby gate serves as an important barrier for stairs, windows and rooms that are simply out of bounds.

Of course (like any baby product) the choice of child safety gates can be a little overwhelming. Pressure-fit, hardware-mounted or foldable, there are plenty of options to choose from. Ultimately there is no incorrect answer. Where the BabyDan Guard Me stands out from its competitors however is in that clever Danish design.

Versatile Design

What first stood out about the BabyDan Guard Me baby gate is that it's super simple to use. Once installed, you can easily open and close it with one hand (with some practice). 'But wait! Is it secure?' I hear you cry. Well yes, to put it bluntly. For the gate to open, you need to both push down and slide the mechanism firmly for it to work. Easy enough for someone of adult height but near impossible for toddlers who not only lack the height, but also the strength to grip it sufficiently and apply the correct amount pressure.

I'll be honest. I was a little sceptical at first when I found out the gate was plastic, but rest assured, the BabyDan Guard Me gate is strong. Not only that, but the plastic is very easy to clean while the retractable concertina effect makes it extremely versatile. Made for narrow stair cases, hallways and corridors an extension kit is available for those who have larger stairs. It can even be fitted diagonally. My stair case is quite narrow, so the extension kit wasn't required but it's nice to have the option if I decide to move to a larger house (a girl can dream).

Easy On The Eyes

On a purely aesthetic level, the BabyDan Guard Me gate is well, Okay. It's not quite something I'd want to show off at dinner parties, but that's the point. It doesn't stick out and say 'hey look at me, I have a baby gate'. It's discreet, especially when folded to the side and not in use, which (at least for me) is a major plus.

Available in White (only), the plastic is 100% PVC free. I hear you, 'plastic', it's not the most glamourous material but it's practical and fairly minimalist. There's certainly no risk of flaking paint which you sometimes see on metal baby gates over time. The fact it also doesn't have gaps like regular baby gates is also useful if you plan on putting it at the top of stairs (at least until they can stand and reach over the top) - no more toy obstacles strewn down the stairs. This is also handy if you're using the BabyDan Guard Me for keeping puppies (depending on the breeds), rabbits or kittens of which can squeeze through the gaps of the traditional prison bar style gates. The absense of a metal bar on the top also means older kids are less likely to climb on top.

Practically Perfect

And while this baby gate is meant for everyday use (this gate is sturdy), it's perfect for those who don't always need it (e.g. grandparents, childminders etc), who probably don't want the hassle of re-installing a gate each time they babysit. Of course it's still visible (and some drilling is required), but not as glaringly obvious as traditional gates.

If the grandparents do decide to store it away though, installation is actually quite easy. I'd recommend using common sense however as the instructions needlessly overcomplicate the whole process. I guess this is also where that concertina effect also comes in handy as the BabyDan Guard Me can easily be folded up and stored away.

Should I Buy the BabyDan Guard Me Gate?

You can't really go wrong with the BabyDan Guard Me retractable baby gate. It's compact, strong, easy-to-use, fits in a variety of spaces and doesn't greatly impact your living environment. It fundamentally comes down to preference. If you're looking for a traditional baby gate, this might not be the baby gate for you. That said, I really can't think of anything negative to say about this product other than it is plastic. Not bad quality plastic, but plastic nonetheless. The main thing is that it's safe and secure and well, it is.
