Whilst I wouldn't quite say "It's a knockout!", removable plates make the George Foreman 14685 a practical and excellent all-round grill.

If you want a sandwich toaster that'll go the distance and then some, I'd highly recommend the George Foreman 14525 Family Grill. It packs a real punch (excuse the pun).

Breville VST026

You'd expect the company that invented the sandwich toaster to produce a high quality product, and so it proves with the VST026. Thank you Breville for solving my sandwich-toasting needs!

The Breville VST025 sandwich press is a tough, heavy-duty beast whose mission is to provide great toasties with minimum fuss and mess. Target terminated.

Everyone at Revooly (with the possible exception of grumpy Jeff) loves sandwich toasters! We've picked out the contenders for the championship belt of the best sandwich-toaster in the world and lined them up in reviews for your entertainment. It should be a battle royale to remember.

How did we live before the sandwich toaster came into existence, bringing a little extra warmth to mundane Monday lunchtimes? Since Breville invented the product forty years ago, there are offerings from Russell Hobbs, Andrew James and a gamut of other generic manufacturers, none of which made the cut. Bad toasters don't heat the filling properly, but instead burn the outside and leave the middle untouched. They refuse to give up their grip on your meal once they've spent a couple of minutes with their jaws wrapped around it and their non-stick surfaces are, frankly, not very non-stick.

Amongst those stepping into our ring after a vigorous tournament to weed out the weaklings are offerings from the original champ, Breville, which first pioneered the sandwich toaster back in the 1970's and the hulking powerhouse grills of George Foreman that have enjoyed so much success in doing away with the need to use conventional oven grills.

Both companies have created products that are high performance thoroughbreds that leave their cheaper supermarket-branded rivals for dead. Because we don't you to have your fingers burnt by a bad purchase, we've made sure that they're good looking models with substance rather than all talk.

Watch out for reviewers' comments on the toasting capacity of each device (which isn't always what they claim) and the little quirks and foibles that can make all the difference to your enjoyment of the device. One of the most important of these is something that you might not consider until after you've toasted your first sandwich: how easy it is to clean up afterwards. There's not much fun in having enjoyed a sumptuous sandwich, only to be confronted with a stubborn mess of solidified cheese and oily grease.

We don't think you'll be disappointed by the performance of our hand-picked toasters. Without further ado, let's rumble!
