I finally took the plunge and swapped out my old wired earphones for wireless ones. I’m really happy with the Apple AirPods, mostly because they’re just easy and fuss-free (mostly!). The Apple AirPods have built-in motion sensors so music starts automatically when they’re in your ear, and pauses when you take them out so there’s no need to be fiddling round with any controls. They are very easy to use.

Compatibility

The Apple AirPods are compatible with certain models of iPad iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Mac (I though including the Mac was a nice touch). Connecting to Apple products is very quick and easy, even I could do it without any help which is saying something! Technically you can use the earphones with non-Apple products but I found setup to be quite complicated so I gave up in the end. Also, if you’re connecting to non-Apple products you lose the voice integration which is a big part of the Apple AirPods.

Sound Quality

Sound quality is OK, but it’s not especially amazing. I compared the sound quality of the AirPods to my old wired Apple earphones and found it to be about the same. I have no complaints about the sound quality but I would have thought it might have been a bit better than the old ones. Maybe next time.

Voice Integration

Changing volume and selecting songs is unfortunately all done through Siri (I think there is a way to do this on the phone but it’s not easy and if you step away from your phone for a few minutes you’re stuck!). I would have liked an easier non-Siri way to control the earphones because I don’t like having to talk to Siri if I’m out in public! To activate Siri you need to double tap the sensors on the earphones, which sometimes seems to work and sometimes doesn’t. They don’t seem to be particularly sensitive.

Battery and Charging

The Apple AirPods have a low-power W1 chip so battery life is pretty good for wireless earphones at about 5 hours continuous. The great thing is that you store the AirPods in a charging case, so they charge whenever they’re not in use. They charge quickly, too. I get about 3 hours play from a 15 minute charge.

Fit and Comfort

I think fit is going to vary from person to person. I know some people who have AirPods who find that they fall out easily or feel uncomfortable. I actually find them to be a very good fit for me and they are comfortable to wear for a few hours at a time. They are also very lightweight so if I get them in properly I can barely tell I’m wearing them. They don’t exactly look ‘cool’ in my ear but that doesn’t bother me.

Design

The AirPods scream ‘Apple’! I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think they’re quite nice and are as sleek and minimal as other Apple products. They do look a bit weird in the ear, I will admit that, but on the whole I think they’ve been designed very nicely. They look good, and they feel good.

Worth It?

In terms of quality and features the Apple AirPods are probably no better than a set of wired earphones. But wired are out of fashion now and wireless are a lot more convenient. If you want to swap from wired to wireless then the Apple AirPods are a good choice. A bit costly but worth it for the convenience. I think it’s only worth it if you use Apple products though, I don’t recommend connecting to non-Apple devices because you do lose some of the functionality and pairing the earphones is a bit more tricky.
